چکیده

We study the force vs extension behaviour of a helical spring made of a thin torsionally-stiff anisotropic elastic rod. Our focus is on springs of very low helical pitch. For certain parameters of the problem such a spring is found not to unwind when pulled but rather to form hockles that pop-out one by one and lead to a highly non-monotonic force-extension curve. Between abrupt loop pop-outs this curve is well described by the planar elastica whose relevant solutions are classified. Our results may be relevant for tightly coiled nanosprings in future microand nano(electro)mechanical devices.

Tension-induced multistability in inextensible helical ribbons.

We study the nonmonotonic force-extension behavior of helical ribbons using a new model for inextensible elastic strips. Unlike previous rod models, our model predicts hysteresis behavior for low-pitch ribbons of arbitrary material properties. Associated with it is a first-order transition between two different helical states as observed in experiments with cholesterol ribbons. Numerical soluti...

Tension-induced straightening transition of self-assembled helical ribbons.

Helical ribbons with pitch angles of either 11 degrees or 54 degrees self-assemble in a wide variety of quaternary surfactant-phospholipid/fatty acid-sterol-water systems. By elastically deforming these helices, we examined their response to uniaxial forces. Under sufficient tension, a low pitch helix reversibly separates into a straight domain with a pitch angle of 90 degrees and a helical dom...

Hydrodynamic damped pitch motion of tension leg platforms

Because of fluctuation in leg tension, pitch motion is very effective fatigue and life safety of leg elements in tension leg structures (TLSs). In this paper an exact solution for pitch vibration of a TLS interacting with ocean wave is presented. The legs of TLP are considered as elastic springs. The flow is assumed to be irrotational and single-valued velocity potentials are defined. The effec...

Comparison of convective heat transfer of turbulent nanofluid flow through helical and conical coiled tubes

Application of nanofluid and coiled tubes are two passive methods for increasing the heat transfer. In the present study, the turbulent flows of water and nanofluid in coiled tubes heat exchanger were numerically studied. CuO-water nanofluid containing 1 vol% copper oxide nanoparticles was used and single-phase approach was considered for nanofluid flow. The effect of different geometrical para...
